„Perhaps the well-known distinction by Gilles Deleuze, Figural-Figurative (which he introduced due to Francis Bacon), could be applied in an attempt to interpret Gordan Nikolić’s painting language. According to this distinction, Figurative is the equivalent to representation, it is narrative and descriptive; on the contrary, Figural (derived from the term Figure, or, better, pure Figure), despite the existence of the subject data, implies the removal or at least suppression of the representation in favor of the act of painting, in the name of painting as a result of the act and process of painting. That is exactly true in the case of Gordan Nikolić; his paintings and entire cycles contain precisely the subject information, Figure: mask, skull, a face of a famous singer, but by no means a motif worth describing, never a goal to be achieved. This is, first of all, the initial impulse from which the artist starts, in order to process that subject data during his work (which is significantly different from subsequent alterations) in many different ways, guided by the intention of simultaneously building and decomposing the image. That image – which is perhaps paradoxical at the first glance – is never abstract, because it always preserves even the most distant trace of the original motif, but it is not figurative, least of all representative, because that trace of representation is not obliging in determining the process, meaning and significance of this painting operation.“
