Nedeljko Gvozdenović (Mostar, 1902 – Beograd, 1988)

Nedeljko Gvozdenović left for Munich in 1922 where he enrolled into a private international school under the tutorage of Professor Hans Hoffman, and he stayed there until 1924. After completing his studies he come back to Belgrade in 1926. He first exhibited in 1929, and had his first solo exhibition in 1934. He was a member of The Twelve group since 1937. He was a member of The Six group since 1954, and he regularly exhibited with them. He was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade from 1940. He was elected as an associate member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1963 and became a regular member in 1970. He had individual exhibitions in many countries around Europe and the world. His works are found in many museums, galleries and private collections. Nedeljko Gvozdenović was one of the initiators to found the Heritage House in Belgrade. He bestowed the city of Belgrade with his legacy consisting of 562 pieces in 1980. He is the winner of numerous awards, including: Politika’s award in 1959, the painting award at the II Nadežda Petrović award in Čačak and the Seventh of July award in 1968.

His paintings are usually classified as intimistic . He painted landscapes, still lifes, interiors and portraits with a poetic atmosphere. He was a devotee of matter and texture in his artistic process. His desired quality was balance, chromatic sonority and rhythmic transparency of the image. Gvozdenović was a sensitive colorist, but his painted surfaces do not collide.
