“I’ve noticed that my work takes shape in the form of a spiral. In each thread I encounter problems from the previous one.”
– Petar Omčikus
ARTE Gallery invites you to the exhibition of Petar Omčikus, which we are organizing on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the first solo exhibition of this tireless creator and one of the most important Yugoslav and Serbian painters. Petar Omčikus was born on October 6th 1926 in Sušak (Rijeka). The landscape of his birth and the scenes with which he grew up defined his painterly expression. He spent part of his life in Belgrade, during which he went to Zadar with his colleagues from the Academy of Fine Arts, becoming one of the members of the Zadar group. During the early fifties he moved to Paris where he lived and worked. He was elected a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1994. He had 61 solo and about 170 group exhibitions. He has won five awards for painting, and his oeuvre is the subject of numerous books and monographs.
He passed away in Belgrade in 2019.
